I am totally obsessed with the moon because I follow the Islamic Lunar months for my medicine and healing purposes but more importantly because of the impact it has on women. 13 lunar cycles to me means 13 menstruation cycles a year (women are led to believe 12 periods each year, one per month, this is wrong teaching), most fertile time of month and when most babies are born.
Dealing with mainly women in clinic, gynaecological issues such as irregular periods and infertility issues are the main complaints. A female having issues with her menstrual cycle can be very upsetting for her. Sometimes it comes too many times a month, sometimes it does not come at all. Sometimes it was light, sometimes it is heavy. Rest assured this can be solved like everything else in life. After a few sessions of acupuncture, it is alone is enough to solve your issues. So how do the moon cycles and menstrual cycles work in harmony?
The 28 day human menstrual cycle is evidence that our ancestors lived on the seashore and needed to synchronise with the tides. The moon’s phase certainly has an effect on the behaviour of many animals including humans. If anyone has the opportunity to go to the seaside during the full moon I encourage you to as even the water behaves differently. And our body of made up of water.
By nature, women are lunar. It's no coincidence that the length of our menstrual cycles are synced up with the waxing and waning of the moon, occurring around every 28 days. But in modern times, if your period comes between 23-33 days, I’m happy.
The moon, females and fertility have long been seen as linked. Just like the ebbing and flowing of tides, menstrual cycles are linked to the moon so you should ovulate around the full moon and have your period near the new moon.
Fertility and full moon are strongly connected. On full moon energy is absorbed. The moon it self absorbs the energy of the sun and gets full brightness. The same happens in our body. It aborbs all kind of things. That's why it is easier to conceive in this time. New moon has the energy of renewing and this is exactly what should happen in your body.
Some even claim that these patterns can be split into two types of menstruation: white moon and red moon menstruation and that there are more births when there is a full moon. Giving birth on full moon is often not so easy as the moon is programmed to accumulate, hold and store and not in releasing. so when someone gives birth in this time and as the moon is not the mood of releasing rather than holding back, it will be a harder work for the mother. When our ancestors were living in tune with nature this rhythm was normal for every woman. Living in cities, having more stress, radiation from cell phones and other electronics, pollution, unhealthy food, sitting too much and is changing you cycle.
Even the actual words menstruation and menses come from the Latin word mensis which means month and relates to the Greek word mene which means moon. In addition, women are more fertile around the full moon because the fullness of the moon hence why I ask my patients to have as much sexual intercourse as possible during the full moon after treatment and Alhamdulillah it works. The brightness of the moon is related to fertility and pregnancy while the darkness of the new moon is emptiness. Even farmers who sow seeds around the full moon have a better harvest.
Detoxing through releasing blood with toxins through this period and beneficial a detox through fasting and food intake during the full moon is essential. Now do you see why it is a Sunnah to have hijama during the full moon and fast during 13, 14, 15 Lunar month.
