Herbs that strengthen Lungs
Our Lungs are our first defence from the outside world. They are connected to our breath, the first outside energy to enter our bodies. When we use certain strengthening herbs, they have a tonifying or strengthening effect on the Lung system.
Ginseng (Ren Shen): Very strongly tonifies the Qi, tonifies the Lungs and Spleen, assists the body in the secretion of fluids and stops thirst. This herb also provides nourishment to the Heart and calms the Shen (mind/spirit). It is the main ingredient in many formulas, which supports the functioning of the Stomach and Spleen and Lungs. In TICM, the Lungs can only be strong if the digestive system is strong, as that is their nurturing organ partnership. Note: do not consume Korean red ginseng if you have heat symptoms.
Astragalus (Huang Qi): one of the most used and prescribed herbs for strengthening the immune system. In Chinese medicine, astragalus is thought to build up immunity to protect us from external pathogens. Astragalus is most useful for those who frequently come down with a cold or the flu, have difficulty breathing such as asthma and c, and who tend to sweat too much or not enough. This herb should not be used on its own if you have autoimmune conditions. Note: Those with autoimmune disorders should speak to their doctor before consuming Astragalus.
Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi): this five flavour berry helps all the organ systems and is one of the most beloved herbs in TICM. It is an adaptogen, meaning it works to counteract the effects of stress in the body of all types: mental, physical, and emotional. It helps moisten the Lungs by retaining clean lung fluid, so it’s best for those with weak breath function, such as people with asthma and chronic wheezing.
