Hives

Hives aka Urticaria

Urticaria pigmentosa (UP) is an allergy-mediated skin condition that causes discolored lesions and itchy skin. The condition is characterised by the presence of too many mast cells in the skin. Mast cells are part of your immune system. Their job is to produce inflammation by releasing a substance called histamine in response to germs and other invaders.

Mainly seen in infants and children, it can also affect adults.

There is no exact cause known for urticaria in science. When the lesions/bumps/hives are scratched or rubbed they release histamines. Histamines are chemicals that start an immune response. Ordinarily the immune system is activated in response to germs or other invaders. However, in the case of urticaria, there is no invader. The immune response results in itchy lesions on the skin.

There is no known “cure” but there are many things you can do to ease the itchy discomfort.

Coconut oil bath:

Cold water

2-3 cups ground oatmeal

Add the oatmeal to the cold water in the bathtub and soak in this for 10-15 minutes.

Baking soda:

Baking soda as required

Water

Mix water with baking soda to make a smooth paste. Take enough baking soda to cover the entire affected area.

Spread this paste evenly over your skin. Leave it to dry.

Wash with cool water:

Fresh aloe vera gel

Take out the fresh gel from an aloe vera leaf and apply this on the affected area.

Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes. Wash with cool water.

Devil’s claw is not an option for me personally as I do not do drugs

Devil’s claw capsules or tablets

A daily intake of 500mg of devil’s claw herb capsules will help to relieve the symptoms of hives.

Turmeric:

1 teaspoon turmeric powder

A glass of water

Mix the turmeric in the water and drink this twice a day.

You can also make a turmeric powder paste and apply it on the rashes.

Tea tree oil:

A few drops of tea tree oil

Cotton or bandage

What You Have To Do

Apply tea tree oil to the affected area and cover with the bandage.

For larger areas, you can mix 15-20 drops of the essential oil in a cup of water. Soak a washcloth in this and place it on the affected area for a couple of minutes

Ginger:

1 teaspoon fresh ginger juice

2 teaspoons honey

Mix the ginger juice with the honey and drink this concoction.

There are also things that you should avoid:

Avoid hot baths to keep from drying out skin and making the itching worse.

Bathing in lukewarm/cool.

Aveeno oil baths have been shown to control itching.

Avoid itchy, irritating clothing try cotton or other light fabrics instead.

keep children’s fingernails short.

Have children wear light cotton gloves to bed to prevent scratching.

Have hijama done on heat release points as well as a detox especially on Liver/Gallbladder.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

Creams made purely from Chinese herbs using coconut oil as 75% base is something I make up for those who have any skin condition.
